All Fun and Games Until Someone Gets Burnt
Last week marked the opening of “All Fun and Games Until Someone Gets Burnt” in London, a collaborative effort between Artkurio and Open Space Contemporary that attempts to highlight issues surrounding overconsumption and materialism.
The show unites emerging artists from the UK and Turkey as well as elsewhere around the world as a symbol of the globalised society in which we now live. Featuring artworks by Meriç Algün Ringborg, Ahmet Civelek, Patrick Hough, Günes Terkol, Rebecca Ward, Rafal Zajko and Block Universe member and performance artist Philip Ewe, each piece concentrates on the idea of consumption and materiality in the world today. The exhibition uses a variety of mediums to portray this ideology – Ahmet Civelek’s “Spoon Paintings” address manipulation of an object, while Günes Terkol uses found materials to construct her narrative and minimalist Rebecca Ward’s practice surrounds the iconography of feminine gesture.
Cinematic images and theology, experiments with bleach and spray paint and conversations around issues of identity are a few more topics to look forward to – all, of course, surrounding the idea of consumption.
