After months of renovating, the wide space and high ceilings of the Berlinische Galerie are hosting pieces of contemporary art again. Kicking off the reopening, the gallery invites the artists Julius von Bismarck, Nasan Tur, Böhler & Orendt and Pınar Öğrenci to showcase their bodies of work. In addition to that, the gallery will also present an exhibition about the architecture in West Berlin in the 70s, revolving around the perceived vision of the future.

Julius von Bismarck: When Platitudes Become Form (26.5-14.8.23)
In the centre of “When Platitudes Become Form” by Julius von Bismarck stands the connection between humans and their surroundings. By questioning their influence on each other, his work follows the act of deconstruction as he takes a closer look on how our society values nature. To exemplify the interplay of both parts, von Bismarck allows a biographical insight by dealing with his own family history.

Nasan Tur: Hunted (26.5-1.4.23)
Digging deeper into societal and political ideologies, “Hunted” by Nasan Tur visualizes internalized behavior patterns to start a conversation around confronting one’s own way of acting. To answer the question of its origin, Tur examines how humans are portrayed in media and therefore how the given role models play a part in one’s own development.

Further looking into the human species, “The Sweet Certainty” by Böhler & Orendt invites you into a spaceship to explore the history of humankind while another installation of a monkey-like animal depicts the sourcing of raw materials.

Pınar Öğrenci: Aşît/The Avalanche (26.5-31.7.23)
Another multi-sensual experience is the movie “Aşît/The Avalanche” by Pınar Öğrenci which takes place in her father’s hometown Müküs to shed light on the traces left by multiple cultures before they were forced to flee or have been assimilated.

Suddenly Wonderful. Zukunftsideen für Westberliner Großbauten der 1970er Jahre (26.5-18.9.23)
Evolving around German history, “Suddenly Wonderful” sets the time back to the Cold War when large buildings hosting spaces for science and culture dominated the city landscape in West Berlin. Today, most of them are threatened by demolition, thus the exhibition is creating an initiative to move the perspective into an appreciation of the past.
