Introducing BECKERHARRISON

BECKERHARRISON “Ladyboy Friends,” 2015

Artistic duo BECKERHARRISON — composed of German photographer Carolin Becker and English artist Simon Harrison — combine their respective talents to create startling yet seamless works that subvert traditional iconography in novel ways. Meeting together on a philanthropic project in Morocco in 2007, they have worked together ever since. In their work, Carolin Becker takes the photos before giving them to Simon Harrison who uses a modern paint-on-photographic style to create final images which appear digitally altered but are actually just the result of a symbiotic collaboration between two complementary crafts. Their work has focused on the role of prostitution in renaissance religious iconography, the effects of conflict and the hypocrisy of extremist belief.
They had two exhibitions at Galerie Hiltawsky last year —  “Holy Shit” and “The Naked Truth”. The former saw the couple taking on religious iconography and practices by inserting images of violence, thus providing a critique of the nature of organised religion. “The Naked Truth” saw them photographing trans women from Thailand and inserting them into Leonardo da Vinci’s ‘The Last Supper,” thus combining iconic art with a modern look at gender representation.
With the aim to “create an illusion within an illusion,” BECKERHARRISON’s work is highly fascinating, toeing a very fine line between what is real and what is imaginary. With a variety of different works on offer, these pieces available for purchase are well worth the investment. To see more or purchase this duo’s work please visit Sleek Art.
