In case you’re in Düsseldorf over the coming weeks and months, be sure to check out the series of events scheduled for this year’s Quadriennale, which kicks off on the evening of April 4 2014. The opener will be “Fanfara Futurista,” a sound installation composed by sound artist Rochus Aust especially for the opening of the Quadriennale and for which he invented an entirely new musical instrument: the Quadraphone. On the rooftops of all the institutions participating in Quadriennale festival, musicians will play a “Fanfara Futurista” on this instrument to send the starting signal for Quadriennale Düsseldorf 2014.
The theme of this year’s Quadriennale is “Beyond Tomorrow” and will be run across 13 museums, exhibition venues and partner institutions between 5 April and 10 August 2014, with very different approaches to this common guiding theme.
There’s plenty more to look forward to as a series of interdisciplinary Quadriennale Nights will be held during the festival and its many locations with the aim of building bridges to other fields, with work from artists including Denmark’s Nina Hole (on the theme of fire), and Berlin artists Holger Mader and Heike Wiermann, who will realise a light projection in the Ehrenhof courtyard that will play across the windows of the Belvedere and also at times the fountain area in the inner courtyard of the Museum Kunstpalast. Also running is the Quadriennale Music Night at the participating exhibition venues, to take place on Saturday, 14 June 2014, in cooperation with the Open Source Festival.
