Taking his cue from era that brought us bell-bottom flares, platform boots and Saturday Night Fever, German-Vietnamese photographer Thanh Nguyen has created an exclusive ‘70s inspired fashion story for SLEEK. According to the photographer, the series, entitled Zen Disco, draws on the decades “sense of carelessness and freedom” — “ I was wowed by their groovy aesthetic,” Nguyen tells SLEEK. “People were unafraid to take risks to mix and match with each other as well as across gender guidelines. There were no rules.”
The styling of the shoot, which took place at a vintage store in Dortmund, was heavily inspired by the work of Verner Panton. The artist, who is considered one of Denmark’s most influential interior designers of the 20th century, created innovative designs with materials and patterns that are now synonymous with the aesthetic of the 1970s. “Panton was a big inspiration when we were looking for a matching location for our shoot,” says Nguyen. “His unusual sculptural, playful as well as colourful designs are perfect to set a stage.”
The photographs, shot against the muted background of the softly-lit interior in hues of mustard and teal, are a nostalgic nod to the trends that defined the decade, further complemented by the evocative bowl cut hair and luminous make-up.
