Celine Paradis is a Berlin-based photographer and multimedia artist who tells nuanced and sensitive stories in her work. With a keen eye for colour, she challenges visual conventions and creates striking images that feel both romantic and precise. This makes her the perfect fit for Liebeskind’s new Archive 2.0 collection. The synergy between Liebeskind and Paradis has produced an urban composition that captures the zeitgeist of Berlin’s style – full of nostalgia, yet thoroughly modern. SLEEK caught up with Paradis to talk about her work, her style, and her love for Berlin.

SLEEK: Would you say your photographs are a reflection of yourself?

CELINE PARADIS: In a way, yes. My inner and outer worlds are both mirrored in my work. I draw influence from everything: my thoughts, feelings, impressions, the art or books I consume, my surroundings, and the city I live in. I’d describe my work as very honest. Right now, I think a lot about authenticity and fragility. I like things that are relatable. Isn’t that what draws us to other people?

S: Your work exudes both melancholy and a futuristic beauty. Why did you choose to merge these two styles?

CP: I’ve always been nostalgic, even as a teenager. I loved going to flea markets, taking photographs with old film cameras, and creating vintage archive looks. I think it’s just a part of who I am – a mix of curiosity about the past and a focus on what lies ahead for all of us.

S: Could you see yourself curating an exhibition in the future? What theme or concept would it explore?

CP: Lately, I’ve been toying with the idea of curating an exhibition next year. I also write poetry and would love to integrate it into my visual storytelling. Who knows, maybe I’ll combine these two art forms for an exhibition.

S: On the topic of ‘narrative depth’ in your art – how do you develop stories behind your images that go beyond what is depicted? Does the process start with an idea, a feeling, or spontaneous inspiration?

CP: My process often involves character building. The set and environment are hugely important to me. I draw inspiration from other art forms, like literature, film, painting, or sculpture. Typically, the process starts with an inspiration that evokes a particular feeling in me. Of course, current themes and emotions that occupy me also play a role. My inner depth naturally informs my visual language.

S: How does your work in Berlin differ from your work in other cities? Does the city influence your creative energy?

CP: Every city impacts my creative energy differently. Factors like local community, culture, and current local issues influence my storytelling, along with visual elements such as light, architecture, and landscape. How this differs in Berlin compared to other cities is an excellent question. To be honest, I sometimes find it easier to work in unfamiliar cities because the inspiration is greater when you’re discovering something new. This is especially true for outdoor locations, as I really enjoy shooting outside the studio. That said, I appreciate my community and the incredible people I’ve met and worked with in Berlin. Storytelling is always a team effort, so it’s vital for me to collaborate with a team that shares my vision.
