As one-half of the creative power couple Christo and Jeanne-Claude, Christo Vladimirov Javacheff and his wife gained notoriety for their large-scale outdoor installations. Despite the unfortunate passing of Jeanne-Claude in 2009, Christo continues to create on his own.
His most recent work, an expansive structure entitled “The Floating Piers”, opens this weekend on Italy’s Lake Iseo in Lombardy. The 100,000 square meters aquatic installation connects the region’s small islands to the Italian mainland, allowing patrons to stroll along and gain a new perspective. This is Christo’s first outdoor installation in a decade, with 2005’s “The Gates” in New York City as his last. While his Manhattan artwork included 7,500 golden gates in Central Park, “The Floating Piers” is a simple walkway that changes colour in response to the weather conditions and time. The piece is a functional structure that required methodical thinking from countless engineers and scientists to erect.
The installation will be open for 16 days, projecting a greater sense of value as a temporary project by the world-renowned artist.
