In this exclusive series, which includes pieces designed by Edward Cuming and Carlota Barrera, Spanish photographer Alex Cascallana favoured an editorial layout over the usual singular presentation. “It fits very well because it wasn’t focused on just one single artist or artistic movement, but was more like a time travel through painting,” says the Madrid-based photographer, who worked from a vintage Louvre Museum catalogue found at a local antique market. “Its size and beautiful layout also became key characteristics as I wanted something to simulate a fashion magazine.” It is not just the physical arrangement that seems to transcend the ages, though. The colours, poses and light are all clearly curated but still as natural and soothing as the antiquated counterparts upon which they are imposed. Cascallana captures a patience that is reminiscent of a bygone era, and though there is an obvious juxtaposition of modernity and absence of the luxurious trimmings that often accompany throwback portrait works, the air of dignity and strength perserveres.
