“Cyberpunk” is the word photographer Zhou Mi uses to describe her work. Fuzzy tones, bold colours, and an unexpected use of lasers, all certainly lend Mi’s fashion story, Cyber Therapy, an ethereal, space-age feel. “The story portrayed in the shoot happens in the future, in 2046,” Mi tells SLEEK. “It depicts a female soldier character called Luna, who has been wounded and sent to a mystical organisation. Here, twin doctors treat her with with traditional Chinese medicine, but after she recovers she finds she has gained supernatural powers.” As her weird and wonderful explanation winds to a close, one thing is made abundantly clear: Mi is looking to celebrate the surreal.
Growing up in China, Mi was fascinated by the clash between old and new in the country’s traditional medicine. The medicinal practices “have thousands of years of history,” she reveals, and yet the tools look decidedly futuristic, “they look very cool,” Mi muses.
A story as idiosyncratic as this, requires detailed research and planning. “I had a clear mind of what the story was before shooting,” says Mi, “Filip Custic inspired me and I had planned some set designs and compositions in advance to help tell the stories.”
Mi’s research paid off. Dreamily shot and rich in narrative, Cyber Therapy is a fantastical visual interpretation of traditional Chinese culture.
