Men’s fashion week kicked off for Milan this weekend and with it came a ninja-inspired collection from Italian luxury label Diesel Black Gold. Presented inside a gritty, industrial warehouse nearby the city’s Navigli district, models walked alongside a massive backdrop of fluorescent orange grids that were more than reminiscent of Berlin’s brutalist techno clubs. Each look sent down the runway featured various layers that serve as a play on texture and form, with jackets in kimono-influenced cuts and oversized puffers in both navy as well as grey.

After the show, SLEEK caught up with the brand’s creative director Andreas Melbostad for a closer look into how Japan’s ancient ninja culture can be seen in each design. “There is so much nobility in the attitude of the ancient Japanese fighter, and I used this as a starting point for the collection,” says Melbostad. “Then, I looked at how we could infuse this into Diesel Black Gold’s DNA in a sort of ‘east meets west’ spirit, which can be seen in pieces such as the utilitarian bomber with a kimono neckline.” The presentation successfully blended Japan’s timeless aesthetic into Diesel’s heritage of luxury with a military edge.
