1. He’s the first male and the first black editor to hold this position
By becoming the first male editor-in-chief since the publication’s inception in 1916 as well as the first-ever black editor to hold the position, Enninful marks a stark change in direction for British Vogue and the industry at large. The theme of gender-fluidity has been embraced amongst designers and brands in a big way over the past half-decade, and the presence of Enninful at the helm of one of the biggest names in print is a strong indication that fashion’s publishing industry is likely to follow suit.
2. He’s the youngest fashion editor of any major publication
Despite his age, Enninful is no stranger to the industry. At 16, he was scouted to model by iconic stylist Simon Foxton, and by 18 he was appointed as fashion director at i-D Magazine, making him the youngest editor to be appointed at any major publication.
3. He’s worked hard to diversify the industry throughout his entire career
Like any good editor, Enninful is known for disrupting the status quo. In 2008, he produced Vogue Italia’s “Black Issue”, which exclusively featured models of colour including Naomie Campbell, Jourdan Dunn and Alek Wek. In 2016, he was awarded the Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his work on diversifying the industry.
4. He’s not afraid to have an opinion
Enninful isn’t one to shy away from conflict. This past February, he responded to Donald Trump’s proposed Muslim ban by creating a video entitled “I’m an immigrant”, featuring 81 leading figures from the industry.
5. His best friend is Naomi Campbell
Despite his outspoken reputation, Edward Enninful is well-liked in the industry. He counts Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss amongst some of his closest friends. So clearly, he’s not afraid to have a good time.
