SLEEK: What inspired your work with Chanel?

Alicia von Rittberg: My style is a mix of cool and fun, yet elegant. I think that is what I found in the outfits from Chanel: very timeless cuts and styles that just brought together this beautiful combination of traditional and young notes. So this shoot was inspiring for me, as a person who really likes to dress down. It reminded me how fun it is to play around with different styles and bring them together within the same look.

S: Do you transform yourself through fashion or do you show a side of yourself through it that sometimes surprises you?

AR: Yeah, absolutely. I always try to work against the obvious somehow. When I had red hair for Becoming Elizabeth (2022), I started to wear completely new colour combinations that I hadn’t considered before. I’d go from wearing these beautiful gowns and dresses on set every day, to just wearing huge hoodies and oversized trousers. I always like to wear elegant jewellery when I’m wearing my super casual outfits, just to add something. But I’m still very interchangeable when it comes to fashion; I wouldn’t say I’ve found my style yet.

S: I think that’s what makes fashion so exciting. What fills you with gratitude?

AR: So many things. I currently have a journal that I try to write in every morning and reflect on three things that I am grateful for. It’s really interesting. I think there’s an expectation to have something super special everyday, but what I realised after doing it for a few months is that it’s about the small things: the sun, friendships, relationships with the people I have in my life. I’m so grateful for the people around me, the love and compassion we have for each other. I would be nothing without them.

S: Do you think you can also inspire change and support change through your work and reach?

AR: With projects like Becoming Elizabeth, there’s a real meaning and message behind it. In Becoming Elizabeth, is showing such a strong female lead developing her own voice that is soft and vulnerable while she is still being strong and respected. That is something I really want to see in our future, and it’s something that we’re starting to see more of in the future. In terms of more political topics through social media, I prefer to engage in a conversation with friends and family rather than pouring my entire opinions online, a space that is filled with so much information. Forme, I will only feel comfortable speaking out online about something once I feel completely confident in my knowledge so that I can contribute to the conversation in a meaningful way.
