In a new episode of “ANDERSSEIN” podcast supported by SEAT, host Minh-Khai Phan-Thi is joined by director and actor Faraz Shariat. On this week’s episode Shariat discusses his sense of home and why a home is something mobile.
You can listen to the podcast episode below as well as reading a brief excerpt from their conversation below:
Minh-Khai Phan-Thi begins each episode of the Anderssein podcast with the following four questions as they were pertinent to her own journey of self-discovery. For this reason, she poses these questions to her guests to find out how they’re doing.
Where are you from?
I grew up in Cologne, I’m a real Cologne boy. For the last 4 to 5 years I’ve actually been calling myself German-Iranian because I’ve gone through a new form of politicization. I now feel differently about my parents’ origins.
Is there a difference between homeland and home for you?
Yes, yes. Home is the place to be criticised and I think that just makes sense. That’s what I feel and why I also have big problems with the term. Homeland is always something very exclusive, politically charged and discriminatory. At home, however, is something that comes out of you. At home, something is mobile and does not claim to be valid for everyone.
What role does acceptance play for you?
I also have my problem with acceptance as a word. For me it implies that you should behave in a certain way in order to be “accepted”. I think I prefer something like “unbiased”.
What question do you want to stop being asked?
All questions with a fetish Iran reference.
