A new exhibition at Frankfurt’s Weltkulturen Museum (Museum of World Cultures) looks at the dialogue between traditional styles of dress in a host of cultures from around the world, and contemporary design. Entitled “Trading Styles” the show juxtaposes over 500 ethnological items, archival photography and artefacts, with the work of four designers from around the world: A Kind of Guise (Germany), Buki Akib (Nigeria) CasettePlaya (England) and P.A. M. (Australia). The four designer teams received a residency at the museum’s laboratory, where they explored the museum’s collection to create new garments. The results are beautifully thoughtful and can be viewed alongside the objects that inspired them in Frankfurt until August 31, 2013. CasettePlaya spoke about her experiences and designs in an interview during the residency earlier this year – watch it here.
