Taking place within their “Hors-les-murs” programme at Espace Louis Vuitton Munich, the Fondation Louis Vuitton are reaching a broader international audience by presenting artworks by post-Apartheid critical photographer David Goldblatt and visual activist Zanele Muholi. The two artists met when Muholi attended the Market Photo Workshop founded by Goldblatt to support young marginalized photographers. From this moment, a bond formed between the two image makers, creating a space for Muholi and Goldblatt to be inspired by one another’s passion for reflecting societal injustice.

Goldbaltt captured colourful landscapes that signify the complex and nuanced relationship that South Africans’ have with their land, while simultaneously portraying a post-Apartheid consciousness. Meanwhile, Muholi’s photography is focussed on addressing the violence the LGBTGIA+ community still has to face in the country. Being a part of the community themself, Muholi has a deeply intimate inside perspective in capturing queer, transgender and non-conforming individuals. Despite their differing artistic approaches, both artists are confronting South Africa’s past and present and share the same desire to tackle issues of personal and societal identity.
