The New Wave of Furniture Design

The new wave of furniture design Max Lamb’s “Marmoreal” marble

Home furnishings have reached a new and exciting era, with artists rewriting the rules on interior design. From lightweight storage options to sturdy shelving, these innovators are exploring the limits of materiality and space. Here, we present five designers transforming shelves and tables into sculptural pieces of art for your home. Broken down into three categories, they are the new kids on the block, the high-fashion crossovers and the high-street collaborators.

The new kids on the block

Furniture Design: New Tendency
New Tendency
Utilising modernist principles to create contemporary design, New Tendency is the Berlin-based duo built upon Bauhaus tradition. Featuring clean silhouettes and functional form, many of their offerings, including the signature Meta Side Table (pictured right), are available for purchase in a rainbow of colours. Berlin’s hippest establishments have already taken notice of the brand, with shops such as the flagship Ace & Tate on Alte Schönhauser Str. decked out in New Tendency design.

Furniture Design: Max Lamb
Max Lamb
With designs that serve as an exploration of materiality to its fullest extent, Max Lamb’s home furnishings are like hand crafted sculptural objects. In 2015, the British artist created his very own slabs of marble which was used to construct the Marmoreal Bathroom (pictured left). Also available in bright white, the Italian-made marble provides contrast for the accompanying colourful splashes of precious stones.

The high-fashion crossovers

Furniture design: Versace
Versace Home A continuation of Gianni Versace’s adoration of everything opulant, Versace Home exhibits the lifestyle of luxury in all its forms. The brand selects only the finest textiles and materials for its homewares collection, which includes furniture for every area of your home. Expect the same enthusiasm for eye-catching prints and gold gilding as you’d find in the brand’s fashion label.

Furniture Design: Rick Owens
Rick Owens Made from an interesting variety of materials including ox bone and petrified wood, Rick Owens’ sculptural creations almost look like primitive pieces of art. The fashion-minded creative ventured into furniture in 2007 with a collection of home wares presented at Paris’ Jousse Enterprise. The success of his designs encouraged Owens to continue a pursuit in furniture, with a steady stream of acclaimed collections released ever since.

The high-street collaborators

HAY x IKEA When IKEA announced its future plans to collaborate with HAY earlier this year, design buffs everywhere were abuzz. The news was revealed shortly after a largely successful Katie Eary partnership, leaving us curious to see what else the Swedish furniture brand has up its sleeves. There’s still a lot more to look forward to in the meantime, though, with HAY continuing to tease out the collab with videos like the one above.
