“Waste not, want not,” so the old saying goes. Today, 22 April, marks the 50th edition of Earth Day— an event held annually since 1970 in support of environmental protection—and it seems as though the adage holds even more significance than ever. As the fashion industry increasingly reflects on its unsustainable actions, with more and more brands turning to upcycling and refashioning deadstock, not to mention the turn towards mending clothes during the global pandemic, garment waste is getting a new lease of life. The latest brand to reimagine their waste is Dutch denim label G-Star RAW, who have teamed up with The Visionary Lab and photographer Wendelien Daan for their #DenimForEarth campaign for Earth Day 2020.

#DenimForEarth sees six designers and artists rework G-Star RAW denim waste into stunning avant garde creations, each one gorgeously captured by Daan. Among those involved are couturier Karim Adduchi, fashion designer Lisa Konno, visual artist Victor de Bie and artist/model Iekeliene Stange (Splitter Splatter). The result are uniquely innovative designs that bridge art and fashion, all the while demonstrating the wonderful possibilities of waste denim—and what that might do for the planet.
