G-Star’s Contemporary Take On Tap Dance Is a Sublime Synergy of Dance, Music and Denim

Since 1989, G-Star Raw have been pioneers in denim. Creating a denim culture that involves experimental designs balanced with practical wearability. In entering their 33rd year of innovation, G-Star is releasing ‘The Rhythm of Denim’, where the brand explores an artistic communication through denim and tap dance.

The dance style originated in the United States in the early 19th Century, in a cross between African and Irish American dance forms. Gaining popularity after the Civil War, it continued to evolve into the 20th Century. Tap dancers began collaborating with jazz musicians, experimenting with improvisation and complex syncopated rhythms. It was during this time that the metal plates on heels and toes typically used in tap became the norm.

History, experimentation, innovation and technology seem to be the common denominator between the brand and tap. To celebrate this philosophy, G-Star collaborates with previous world champion tap dancer, Kamira Samuel and first-class Broadway performer, Lee Howard with their special video release for ‘The Rhythm of Denim.’ Dressed head-to-toe in G-Star denim, the two dancers use dance as their dialogue and denim as their uniform – merging histories together, as tap dance makes a modern revival worldwide.

“The simple premise of two characters in separate locations communicating transcendently through rhythm gives a contemporary lens for us to view tap dance in its rawest, most authentic form.” – Jack Evans, Choreographer.
