Denim innovator G-Star has launched a new art platform, ‘The Art of RAW,’ an ode to the brand’s art and design philosophy embedded in its DNA.

The platform showcases collaborations with Internationally acclaimed design talents to create a series of art objects that utilises and experiments with denim waste. Giving total freedom to create in the individual artists’ own disciplinary, the outcome has presented a creation of unique pieces of the upcycled material.

So far, we’ve seen the works of award-winning designers Teun Zwets, Athena Gronti, and most recently, Dutch designer Lenny Stöpp. The versatility of denim was ever-present in the works of the three artists — Zwets’ furniture objects titled, ‘Denim Living, which features a lamp, cupboard and chair made by layering denim waste piece-by-piece and laminated with a binder. Next, Greek designer Gronti created a large quilt named ‘Ariadne’s Thread, that features soft to rough areas; intricate stitching to abstract shapes, all of which brought together the paradoxes found in the result of intensive denim research and the juxtaposition within the history and sociologic aspects of the fabric.

In the latest collaboration, The Art of RAW platform showcased Stöpp who produced a furniture series, ‘Fluff Stacks,’ that consists of a side table, a stool and a lamp. Stöpp’s approach is liked like a science experience, inventing his own denim recipe by mixing water, starch and denim pieces in the industrial pulp machine, to create a brand new material.

The results thus far have shown the multi-purpose of denim in various artistic avenues from sculpture to fine art. The Art of RAW has announced the next collaborator, glass artist Nienke Sikkema. The works of the artists will showcase throughout the rest of the year.
