For the first time in its history, fast-fashion label H&M will release a full-scale capsule collection with a contemporary artist at the helm. Joining the brand in its introduction into painterly design is American artist Alex Katz. Set for release on 1 December, the line will include men’s and women’s clothing as well as homewares. While no further details have been mentioned, we can already imagine Katz’s bright, pop-inspired illustrations on any of the brand’s pocket-friendly closet staples.
It should be noted, however, that this is not exactly H&M’s first dip into contemporary art. In 2014 the brand teamed up with Jeff Koons to create a handbag featuring his famous balloon dog design. Nonetheless, this occasion is a momentous one, as it marks a shift from the label’s current string of fashion-focused collaborations that most recently included French luxury label Kenzo.
