The dynamic imagery of Barcelona-based photographer, Álvaro Sánchez-Montañés, seems carefully curated. From the aesthetically compiled sports centre to the well-timed leaping dog, his presented scenes appear produced. However, in the truest sense of the word, Sánchez-Montañés is a flâneur – he encounters these instances and captures them at just the right moment. There is no pre-planned set-up.
The photographer’s spontaneous pictures are the result of his penchant for the banality of daily life. As well as his opportune shots, he also boasts a large portfolio of scenic imagery. Depictions of quaint Icelandic villages accompany interesting compositions of typically unattractive items in visually unappealing spaces. Re-presenting ordinary things,Sánchez-Montañés transforms them into aesthetic objects, captured particularly well in the spooky surrealism depicted in his deserted “Alter Hafen” landscapes.
The recipient of numerous awards like the Epson Photography Award 2009, International Photo Award 2009 and Fundación AENA 2012 -Sánchez-Montañés was also a finalist at Descubrimientos PhotoEspaña 2010. His work has been displayed in cities across the globe; from his native Madrid to New York to Bilbao, and is a popular addition to private and public collections alike.
