“Royal Blue” 2014
Bernhard Handick is a photographer and self-declared appropriation artist. In his dream-like collages, he complements, rearranges and distorts fashion-related images, effortlessly merging analogue and digital forms of manipulation and turning commercial photographs into works of art with few more than a number of clicks, cuts and strokes.
Handick’s work is largely influenced by musical resonances. In his collages he rearranges the sound, structure, and harmony of photographs, visually remixing them and decoding their symbolic elements. Through this, he adds a vulnerable touch to the models’ flawless appearances, turning highly polished photos into intimate portraits. Handick deliberately leaves the meaning behind his works open, granting the spectator the active role of completing the piece through their subjective interpretations – “in this sense”, he writes in an artist’s statement, “she/he is the one to add the final brushstroke”.
Although he is based in Germany, Handick and his works are constantly travelling around the globe. Amongst others, he has worked for international magazines such as Vogue Italia and the New York Times and exhibited his works in Goa, Moscow, New York, London and Amsterdam.
