Creating highly complex paintings with up to fifteen different superimposed layers, the Berlin Lichtenberg-based Christian Awe has created a portfolio that is marked by its inventive use of colour and its experimental yet discernible rhythm.
He started off as a small time graffiti artist in the creative tumult rising in the wake of the Berlin wall coming down. Yet he has transferred those skills to painting with excellent effect, combing sprays with acrylic and ink to give his work its hyper-saturated look. As a result it can be seen as the perfect synthesis of street art and abstract expressionism. His successful move from the world of hip-hop art to the world of art galleries has resulted in Istanbul, Perm and Miami exhibitions, as well as residences at Princeton, Baghdad and London. Nevertheless, he hasn’t left his graffiti habits entirely, still composing most of his works during the nighttime.
With clients such as Mercedes Benz and the Perm Pedagogical University commissioning him to create large-scale public works, Awe is in high-demand. Yet, in addition to his professional work is a steadfast commitment to his local community. He also runs art workshops and paints for charity. This is marked by his belief that “art and culture are the main components that hold our community together.” Most famously, his mural ‘‘Andanzé’ — the size of a tennis court — was revealed at the Berlin Gallery Weekend in Schöneberg. With a variety of different works on offer, these pieces available for purchase are well worth the investment. To see more or purchase Awe’s work, visit Sleek Art now.
