When we put the spotlight on the little details or ordinary items surrounding us, we might be surprised about what they reveal. Driven by curiosity to explore the stories behind objects, places or people, Crista Leonard shows their beauty in a new light.
The portrait, documentary, fashion and still life photographer from Andorra is based between Barcelona and New York. As a young girl, Crista developed a deep sense of people and places and an interest in capturing unspoken moments visually. She honed her style – neoclassical, serene and suggestive – at London’s Goldsmiths University and has applied it to both her commercial and personal work for over a decade. Taking her inspiration from what she sees while looking out of car windows as well as from history and her childhood, she is always fascinated by different perspectives. “I’ve always had this thing where I’ll suddenly be struck by the beauty, weirdness or ordinariness of an object,” she says. By messing with the objects very nature, she exposes elements often hidden behind their familiarity.
In her previous works, Crista has explored the concepts of nostalgia, home, sadness but also deep comfort and joy. Her most notable work is a long-term documentary project exploring the idiosyncratic characters of the maritime town Biarritz.
In 2015, Crista launched the luxury interiors magazine Philistine with set decorator and long-time collaborator David de Quevedo. It serves as a premium platform for her and her peers to archive visual inspirations and experiment with new aesthetics. She is currently represented by Artlist and available for commission.
