Taking a look at life on the streets reveals a lot about the world around us. People sitting in their cars, colourful vans parked on empty streets or forgotten, half-demolished buildings divulge not only a place’s history but also current trends. By taking these subjects and putting them into diverse series of street photography, Frankie Casillo provides a glimpse of contemporary urban living.
Born in 1984 in Foggia, Italy, Casillo is now based in Berlin and spotlights different lifestyles from all over the planet. He often portrays people without showing their faces, which allows viewers not to get distracted by eyes or expressions. Instead, he puts the focus on people’s gestures and how they fit into their surroundings. Playful titles such as “Metrofloritan” or “Buda&Pest” explore humans or other organic organisms such as plants within urban spaces. Casillo renders viewers to pay attention to what is happening on the streets and how much this tells us about life by pointing out small details or focusing on unusual perspectives.
Casillo shoots all his candid photos on 35mm colour film. He has collaborated with the Art & Design University of Halle, Germany, and he participated in Fotografia Europea 2016 in Reggio Emilia, Italy. He has also been featured by LensCulture, Urban Picnic Street Photography and Phases Magazine.
