“People complain that they can’t see the clothes because they are too far away, this season everybody is front row,” declared Karl Lagerfeld in preparation for Chanel’s AW16 ready-to-wear presentation. As models walked the runway at Paris’s Grand Palais, guests were transported to the original 31 rue Cambon salons where Gabrielle Coco Chanel first presented her designs. The clothing echoed this revisit to the past, with ensembles that put a contemporary spin on the fashion house’s original allure and codes. Classic tweed dresses and jackets were shown in a wide range of colours with silhouettes falling mid-length and longer. Accessories included long strands of pearls, equestrian inspired head-dressings and horizontal lacing boots. Eveningwear maintained a simple elegance with lightly pleated chiffon and delicately ruffled lace.
