In the dynamic world of sneaker culture, longevity and innovation are often prized above all. With its bold approach to experimentation and unwavering commitment to innovation, KEEN brings a breath of fresh air into this year’s Spring/Summer season as it commemorates the 10th anniversary of its most revolutionary design, the UNEEK open-air sneaker. This isn’t just a celebration, it symbolizes an evolution of a design philosophy that promises to keep pushing the boundaries between activewear and street style to create a truly unique style that reimagines footwear for the modern wearer.

The UNEEK silhouette debuted a decade ago in 2014 with a radical proposition: a shoe that offered more than just protection and style—it was a sandal that challenged the norms of conventional footwear construction. With its distinctive two-cord system, the UNEEK was designed not just to fit the foot but to complement its complex shape and movements to become an urban everyday staple. Rory Fuerst Jr., KEEN’s Director of Innovation, envisioned a sneaker that broke free from the constraints of traditional design and instead morphed to meet the foot’s natural contours.

This season, KEEN amplifies its celebration with a series of high-profile collaborations, partnering with cultural icons like Mita Sneakers, Only NY, and End in the major fashion capitals of Tokyo, New York and London, respectively. These collaborations are not just a nod to the sneaker’s stylish relevance but a testament to its global appeal. The UNEEK finds its place in each of these cities, underscoring the sneaker’s versatility and enduring popularity in both street style and high fashion.

Since its launch, the UNEEK has remained an integral member of KEEN’s lineup, one that stands strong in the face of ever-moving trends. To further commemorate the anniversary, KEEN is introducing three new UNEEK variations, each of which continues the legacy of innovative and sustainable design. The UNEEK II Convertible, which features an adjustable heel strap that transforms the sandal into a slide, offering a customizable fit for the on-the-go lifestyle of its wearer. The UNEEK Flat Cord, which brings a refreshed look to our open-air sneaker with 8mm cords. Rounding out the trio is the UNEEK O3, which combines the lightweight feel of a sneaker with enhanced cushioning for everyday wear. Without compromising on performance or aesthetics, the UNEEK models are constructed for durability, resistant to shifting trends, and use eco-friendly materials in every step of the process.

This is part of KEEN’s wider ‘Consciously Created’ program, which aims to streamline footwear production and reduce the global impact of the fashion industry on the planet. Initially, no factory wanted to undertake its manufacturing due to its unconventional design. However, Fuerst Jr.’s dedication led to a production breakthrough, and now, a decade later, the process has been refined to an impressive 15 minutes per pair, all within KEEN’s family-owned factories.

“The UNEEK isn’t just a product it’s a representation of years worth of research, development, and a passion for redefining footwear. It started with two problems to solve: defy industry standards for how a shoe is made, and deliver an unencumbered fit,” explains Fuerst Jr. He continues, “It was a long journey, but the result is a shoe that truly feels like an extension of your foot.”

Available now online and in select retailers, the latest UNEEK styles promise not just a purchase but an experience—an opportunity to walk in shoes that are as thoughtfully designed as they are bold. As KEEN celebrates this significant milestone, the UNEEK stands as a symbol of enduring innovation and a challenge to the footwear industry: to continually evolve and embrace change.
