A previously unpublished Keith Haring book is now available and it’s all the rage for its illustrations of Manhattan reimagined as penises in all shapes and sizes. Released via the independent publishing house Nieves in Zurich, “Manhattan Penis Drawings For Ken Hicks” is a collection of penis drawings that Haring did back in the ’70s to portray his deep concerns about politics, sex and power. What is interesting about this selection of cartoonish depictions is that they showcase Haring’s work, from his formative years, which curiously foreshadow his future artworks surrounding the AIDS crisis. The playful cartoonish illustrations range from obvious reinterpretations of architectural landmarks, such as the Twin Towers reinterpreted as a pair of erect penises, to abstract representations of Manhattan’s energetic and chaotic lifestyle. As one of the key figures in the New York 1980s art scene, it is fascinating to see just how Keith Haring began a journey of unparalleled artistry.
