Berlin-based musician Lary is a force to be reckoned with. Not only has she successfully gained a following of listeners mesmerised by her soulful sound, she’s done so on her own terms. This relentless attitude towards authenticity bleeds into all aspects of Lary’s life, most notably into her eye-catching sense of fashion. Dressed in this season’s hottest denim, we followed the irresistible songbird around Kreuzberg for a chat on fashion, music and what she has in-store for us next.

On her shopping philosophy:
I have to admit I don’t really buy clothes. When I do, more often than not it’s vintage – but I don’t go out with the intent of purchasing something. I usually stumble across things through a boutique window; I’m a spontaneous shopper.
On festival season and festival fashion:
Festivals are definitely the best way to listen to music. I can’t wait for the warm weather so I can sit in the sun with my friends while discovering new bands. With this rise in festival fashion, it’s a shame because the music has lost focus. I recently saw all these Coachella posts and basically everybody is beside the big wheel posing in exactly the same way. Suddenly festivals are more about dressing in a certain style than the artists playing.

On her musical inspirations:
I’ve been listening to a lot of older bands lately: Portishead, Massive Attack, The Doors and Talking Heads. But I’m also loving these new punk and folk sounding artists such as Courtney Barnett, Palace and Fat White Family. Interesting sounding guitars are my shit at the moment

On the lasting impression of great late musicians David Bowie and Prince:
Apart from the music, both inspired me tremendously as a person and as a woman because they were fearless and free in every regard. The passing of such artists is especially sad, because there are not many musicians like this anymore. These days you’re either extroverted and fashion-forward but your music sucks, or the other way around and the good music you make comes with an “I don’t care what I wear” attitude. Whereas Prince and Bowie showed that it is possible and okay to express yourself in every way possible. They knew that fashion was a lot more than just trying to look good or following trends.
On what’s next:
I’m just trying to write new songs, getting better at the piano and the guitar. That means I spend a lot of my time getting all emotional and writing. Then, I plan to go to NYC so that I can work on finishing my album by the end of the year.
