Japanese photographer, Tomoo Arakawa, has surprised his audience with a twist on conventional narrative in his latest photobook “Laugh at eXperience”.
The co-founder of Green Tea Gallery, based between Fukushima and Brooklyn, has shot his newest project in Los Angeles. With the intention of portraying the essence of West Coast living in the internet age, his series of predominantly black and white images are juxtaposed with ambiguous headings.

Arakawa’s fun series of text gives unexpected titles to his photographs,. Images of skyscrapers, palm trees and cars are accompanied by ramblings like: “my ganjaman have some nice sess in the West”, “attention! This is the omega” and “american hot dad”.

The unpredictable pairing between photograph and text allows readers to pick the book up at any page, and enjoy the pictures with their humorous titles. Although the text doesn’t seem to follow a storyline, it’s clear from the photography that this is a diary of the artist’s time in LA , and the writing his perception of what was going on around him.
