Although Berlin is now most-famous for techno, the shadows of ’80s new wave and post-punk music, attitudes and philosophy hang around the city like a familiar ghost. This is what inspired photographer Letizia Guel, who is based in the German capital, for her editorial on rebellion. Intent on recreating the image of the misunderstood teenager stuck in a society whose cogs churn in the opposite direction, the photographer positions her model, the androgynous Vivian Lawson, among the swans and ferns of a pond in North London—a reference to the environmental concerns that have bubbled up into a global movement.
Styled in monochrome in a variation of patterns and cuts, some feminine and others masculine, the turquoise tones of the model’s hair stand out in stark contrast to the muted backdrop. Seeking a compatible personality behind the faces of the models she shoots, Guel chose to photograph Vivian because she saw “rebellion and serenity in his aesthetics in a way that resembled what I wanted to convey.”
