Accessories that intersect body armour and jewellery have become pretty mainstream since bondage inspired pieces have gone from the clubs to the streets and catwalks. MALWARE are a label taking the BDSM vibes into a whole new and techy territory – releasing a range of body jewellery equipped with a potentially dangerous and viral weapon.
The collection consists of handmade chain and wire harnesses that flow around the body. Central to each piece is a USB which has been equipped with a data deletion software DBAN. When the powerful virus is worn close to the skin it is proposed to exude a protective aura for the wearer.
Behind the concept stands an Amsterdam based graphic design duo PONTO, (in collaboration with Rachel Rose O’ Leary) whose previous projects include garments that attempt to contact extraterrestrial life and digital exhibition spaces, along with projects for the Serpentine Pavilion. In the designers’ words ‘MALWARE seeks to empower the wearer, transmuting passive computer users into active agents.’ This statement and concept chimes in during our rapidly developing technological world where data loss and cyber crimes are serious threats.
