With a career spanning five decades Takesada Matsutani is one the greatest living Gutai artists. Originating in 1950s Japan, the Gutai Group was the artist collective in postwar Japan that pushed for artists to experiment with the pure materiality of painting. As a painter Matsutani has done more than that: he has created a unique visual language culminating in works where he embeds pigments with expressive texture that jumps off the canvas. In his latest show at Zürich’s Hauser & Wirth, Matsutani presents some of his 70s paintings that play with notions of time and movements through sensual swollen forms.
