Nairy Baghramian, the Artist Working Against Perfection

The new exhibition of the Furla Series, called Misfit, is a partnership between the Galleria d’Arte Moderna Milano and the Fondazione Furla. In this third serie Nairy Baghramian, a Berlin based artist, got the opportunity to do her first solo exhibition in an Italian institution. This new project of Fondazione Furla has been made possible with the help of Italy’s foremost museums. The representation of her art outlines the crucial message that you can only find the real beauty, if you see the flaws.

The Iran born and Berlin based contemporary artist, Nairy Baghramian, claims that every kind of art is associated with time, place and socio-political context. She once said that her parents had quite different political views, and so they raised her to individuality and contradiction. Her upbringing also caused her to stand against conservative and patriotic views which is reflected in her art. The work is a blend between sculptures and installations concerning architecture and the human body.

“Her work addresses temporal, spatial and social relationships to language, history, and the present, with forms which materialize in response to contextual conditions or the premises of a given medium“

While her art is autonomous, it is also vulnerable. For this exhibition she combines the playfulness of childhood with a kind of irritation in her installations. One of the central points are redefining the relationship between the object and the context of breaking down the boarders between interior and exterior.

The so called series „Misfits“, launched in 2017, was enabled by the Galleria d’Arte Moderna Milan in partnership with the Fondazione Furla. This shows a new project of an ongoing procedure of the foundation, which was founded in 2008, where the contemporary art scene in Italy is going to be pushed forward.

Supporting leading artists from Italy and around the world by presenting their art in exhibitions and events in collaboration with Italy’s foremost art institutions.

For this installation Nairy Baghramian was inspired by the lovely garden of the Galleria d’Arte Moderna Milano.

This embodies the carefree part of childhood, whilst frustration comes up as a result of fewer availability. Linking the idea of seeing „play“ as an educational tool with the mirror image of frustration and disappointment, the heart of the exhibition was born.

Regarding these thoughts and inspirations, the artist brought out huge sculptures for uniting the interior and exterior of the museum.

Troughout five rooms, Nairy Baghramian created two pieces of sculptures in each room in different materials to show the exact opposite adjoining on the outdoor terrace. She wants to work against our childhood belief, that everything must fit one another. All of the sculptures express exactly the opposite and negotiate this way of beauty. From her point of view, the only way to find beauty is to discover error.

“The Misfits springs from a short-circuit of impressions and moods, and is informed by the perfect synthesis of contradictions marking Jumbled Alphabet, the photographic portrait of a child“
