Nan Goldin is famed for her photography – candid snapshots documenting her life, and the lives of those around her. What fans of her work may not know, however, is that the photographer also has a penchant for drawing, having accompanied her diary entries with doodles since childhood. Now, for the first time ever, these secret drawings have been disclosed at Matthew Marks Gallery.
In her newest show entitled “Blood on my Hands”, a selection of these never-before-seen illustrations join the photographer’s renowned large-scale grids. Multiple photos placed in one frame aim to emulate Goldin’s early method of displaying her work through slideshows, revealing narrative connections between individual pictures. Incorporating a variety of colours with the aim of unifying the images, the pink, blue, gold, red and black themed grids represent moments she has captured in different countries over her career. This special exhibition marks the photographer’s 10th solo show at the New York gallery since 1995.
Luckily for New York-based photo enthusiasts, the MoMA is also hosting a Nan Goldin show until 12 February 2017. There, the busy photographer is exhibiting almost 700 more images, including a selection from her best-known work “The Ballad of Sexual Dependency”.
