Last year the inaugural edition of Photo London came to the UK’s capital, bringing with it a revived interest in the medium that was reflected across the city. Photography became the talking point of collectors, galleries and auction houses. As the energy builds yet again, we give you our top tips for the Somerset House hosted 2016 edition.

Around the City
London’s Institutions Take on Photography
• Media Space at The Science Museum presents an exhibition of early works by pioneering photographer Henry Fox Talbot entitled “Dawn of Photography.”
• Each year, all eyes turn to new talent as The Photographers’ Gallery hosts its annual Deutsche Borse Prize, celebrating the photographer who has made the most impact on the medium in Europe. This year the nominated artists are: Laura El-Tantawy, Erik Kessels, Trevor Paglen and Tobias Zielony.
• Celebrated British photographer Martin Parr has curated “Strange and Familiar: Britain as revealed by international photographers.” On display at the Barbican, the show looks at how the British are perceived by other cultures.
Looking to Commercial Galleries
• Simon Lee presents an exhibition of historic and new work by Keiji Uematsu, the Japanese conceptual artist who attempts to draw attention to natural forces and the human body’s reaction to them.
• Shigeo Anzaï at White Rainbow chronicles a list of the internationally acclaimed artists he has encountered over his successful career. Expect appearances by Daniel Burren and Richard Long amongst others in the presented works.
• Ben Brown presents the first major gallery show of Pictet Prize 2015 nominee, Ori Gersht, showing his illusionistic photographs of landscapes and the elements.
Top Events of the Week:
• What challenges do you face as a photographer in London? Head to private members club Blacks in Soho on Tuesday 17 May at 6.30 pm to hear Kim Shaw, Executive Director of Photofusion, and Christiane Monachi, Editor of Photomonitor, as they discuss the platforms each provides for photographers as well as the facilities and communities they have formed as a result.
• OffPrint at Tate Modern – The annual photo book and photography publishing fair will be held in the Turbine Hall at Tate Modern. It is the place to discover fresh new talent, craftsmanship and innovative ideas from a variety of established and self publishers.
• Sotheby’s, Christie’s and Phillips will all hold their own photography sales, serving as the ultimate place for spotting rare and exquisite works.
