With its DIY culture, Berlin is a breeding ground for artists working across all possible mediums. For Perera Elsewhere that means creating electronic soundscapes that sound like handmade string instruments, or vice versa, if not something else in between. With her new album “All of This” out soon, the London-born musician is back with two already released singles that are part of a video trilogy. Additionally, she’s one of the headliners at this year’s Torstrassen festival in Berlin which starts on 8 June.
Having recorded while on the road, Perera made the most of synthesizers for this LP. “For the first album, I was being a purist with recorded sounds and manipulated those textures a lot,” she says. “And with the new one I wanted to be more psychedelic.” The result is a trippy and haunting hybrid of trip-hop and folk, which can be best described by “Karam“, her very own take on 50 Cent’s “Candy Shop”.
“I usually start with creating the sounds,” she says about her creative process. “Then I write or sing about something happening around me. The album is about the fact that I’m dealing with all of this shit in the world.” Perera may be rigorous with her production and concept but she claims she is not a perfectionist. “I’m not scared to fuck it up,” she reveals. “I’m a chaotic person but even chaotic people can be control freaks.”
