Mermaids occupy a space between monster and magical, luring sailors to their death or desperately trying to become human, depending on who is telling their story. In Italian and Paris-based fashion photographer Alice Rosati’s new photo book I’m A Mermaid, out now from Kahl Editions, the mythological creature is neither particularly magical nor monstrous, but simply a fish out of water. Rosati places her siren in different locations across the world, ranging from extravagant interiors of the Middle Eastern Gulf region to the kitsch theme parks of Orlando Florida, or New York’s nightlife scene, nestled up to celebutante Amanda Lepore.
Although Rosati is usually the one behind the lens, for I’m A Mermaid the photographer slips into a faceless gold lamé suit, handing her camera to people who happen to be in the area to capture her travels. Throughout the journey of the book, the metallic costume is weathered and worn down, exposing a matte yellow under layer on the hands, knees and mouth.
