Printed Matter’s eleventh annual NY Art Book Fair takes place from 16 until 18 September at MoMA PS1. The free event is considered the world’s premiere gathering for artists’ books, catalogs, monographs, periodicals and zines.
However, the fair has a lot more to offer beyond books. Last year, 8 Ball Zine Zone’s stick-and-poke tattoos and airbrush T-shirts were some of the most popular attractions of the event. This year, Gagosian Gallery’s “FLASH FLASH FLASH” is taking things a step further again. Fair-goers will be given the opportunity to get inked by some of New York’s finest tattoo artists from Brooklyn’s famous Flyrite Tattoo parlour. The lucky few to receive the limited edition tickets will choose a flash designed by one of six artists including Genesis Breyer P-Orridge, Kim Gordon, Devendra Banhart, Turner Prize winner Douglas Gordon, Max Hooper Schneider and Richard Wright.
According to Printed Matter “Tattoos will be hand-numbered on the bodies of the purchasers, and once six people have a tattoo, the design will be retired forever”. With only 36 appointments, there is bound to be disappointment, but there is some silver lining as limited edition prints of each artist’s flash will also be for sale throughout the fair.
So whether it’s Kim Gordon’s neatly drawn chair, Richard Wright’s floral design or Genisis Breyer P-Orridge’s barking dog, there’s a nice variation of select designs to choose from. Scroll through the images below for a preview of the available illustrations.
