Milana Schoeller
Madame Clicquot gave her name to one of the world’s most influential companies. To celebrate her creativity and visionary success, the very same company she put her life’s work into created an award, running since 1972, to highlight women who have made extraordinary contributions in the areas of economy, society and culture. Nominations are open for this year’s prize until July 10, and so far, scientists, filmmakers and entrepreneurs have made the shortlist.
Sleek‘s choice for the Prix Veuve Clicquot is German painter Milana Schoeller, 27 year old artist from Munich who is now based in Stockholm. Her focus as an artist is all about giving back to the environment – she sees her artworks as similar to books, where she can deal with the issues that affect the world. Her education, in Global Design and Business Management, has had an obvious impact on this work, which is her attempt to make sense of wider issues. In particular, she cites a trip she took to Greenland as an eye-opening experience that motivates her artwork.
In sharp contrast to her mother (who runs Schoeller & von Rehlingen PR), Schoeller is more reserved, attempting to shake the stereotype of a “Society Girl” from Munich (one of the reasons behind her move to Sweden).
In her paintings, she explains, there is a surface appearance of purity, of wholeness. However, when you look closer, the semblance of intactness fractures, and it’s the same story with the environment. It’s her commitment to clarifying this message through her artwork that makes her so suited to the Prix Veuve Clicquot. Changing the world through art – an aim that fits in perfectly with the ideals of the prize.
