Russia's Most Unique Faces Are Taking Over Fashion

Non-models have been slowly taking over the Fashion industry for some time. While celebrities are still the favourite faces for big brand campaigns, on the catwalk, industry insiders have joined the lineup. This includes photographer Wolfgang Tillmans walking at Hood by Air, Gosha Rubchinsky’s appearance and stylist Lotta Volkova’s seasonal stroll for Vetements. However, some agencies are putting aside influence and industry reputation, they also don’t require symmetrical faces and Hollywood smiles.

Lumpen celebrates scars, crooked noses, sticking-out ears and “bad taste” hair cuts across their selection of unique faces. Anti-Agency and Tomorrow Is Another Day are among the similar success stories of agencies doing away with traditional model requirements. Lumpen, however, aligns with Fashion’s current and ongoing post-Soviet obsession. The Moscow-based agency has rounded-up unique faces from the most neglected corners of the largest country in the world, Russia. Like many, founder Avdotja Alexandrova was tired of “perfect” models and after a discussion with her friend Gosha Rubchinsky, decided to start Lumpen. Fashion is clearly eager to work with unconventional beauties, her models have walked for Balenciaga, Vetements and Comme des Garçons among others. In a Kendall Jenner obsessed world, Lumpen is the antidote. Scroll through the images to see some of the faces on Lumpen’s books.
