Issey Miyake has gained a reputation for dismissing the standard runway in favour of a spectacle, aerially dressing the women of his SS20 show with garments that descended from the ceiling on a giant hoop and taking his SS20 men’s show to a Parisian park to play ball and practice acrobatics. For his men’s AW20 show, the Japanese designer focused on an improvisational jazz jam session.
Replacing many models with musicians, Miyake put his accordion pleated suits on bassists, brass players and drummers who provided the soundtrack for dancers who rolled around the floor, suspended in steel hoops. Like many of its counterparts, the Plissé brand seemed to be looking back to the tailoring of the late ‘80s and early ‘90s to fit boxy, casual suits, with Miyake taking cue from the Memphis design movement—for example, jackets featured energetic prints reminiscent of the Solo Jazz Cup. Other nostalgic accessories included berets and accordion pleated pocket squares.
