As a bodily response to curiosity, the works pose questions and leave subtle disturbances that linger. Hannah Sophie Dunkelberg presents works from her series of reliefs in our SLEEK Art Space. Her pieces move between abstraction and concreteness, appearing as traces of a process that unfolds not linearly, but in an ongoing dialogue. The in-between spaces and the soft fabric of our shared social environment are deconstructed and reassembled. Throughout, Dunkelberg’s interest in materiality, humor, and the relationship between us, the world, the work, and its surroundings is clearly felt.

Born in 1987 in Bonn, Hannah Sophie Dunkelberg lives and works in Berlin. Her works challenge the fetishistic status of modernism by combining industrial processes and regional craftsmanship with elements of pop culture. She welds, forges, and lacquers her pieces herself, pairing heavy materials with playful forms and colors. In her works, Dunkelberg negotiates the tension between the real and the abstract, employs symbols of girlishness and femininity to reflect on patriarchal structures, and uses humor as a tool to subvert prevailing norms.
