SLEEK Mix: Tirzah

Photography by Spike Lynch-Koch.

Tirzah doesn’t give interviews at the moment. Knowing this, I decided to ask her for an interview. The British musician releases her album trip9love…??? seemingly on a whim and totally out of the blue. She plays a concert in Berlin’s Trauma Bar that is hardly announced but sold out immediately. Tirzah Mastin is a musician to the core. She doesn’t seem to bother with promotion and that’s something I admire in her, along with the music itself. I listen to her latest album trip9love…??? on repeat. It oscillates in and out of Nineties R&B, broken by uptempo beats and a distorted electric guitar. Her album is experimental, exciting and relaxing at once. While listening to her sound, I wonder what Mastin’s everyday life might look like. She lives in Sidcup, a south-east London area, along with her partner Giles Kwakeulati King-Ashong – also known as Kwake Bass – and their two children. Both parents thrive on music. What do they listen to in the morning when they sit at breakfast; when they cook together for the whole family in the evening; when they don’t leave the house on a rainy Sunday? Tirzah Mastin tells us in SLEEK MIX: through a playlist, curated by her, of songs that inspire her and accompany her in life.
