“People I’ve loved, I have no regrets. Some I remember, some I forget. Some of them living, some of them dead. All I want, is to be home,” sings Dave Grohl seated at a black grand piano. The camera filming him seems almost to want to hide behind the blurry images it produces. Hearing these words from the song ‘Home’, off the LP Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace, it occurs to me that, looking back, some stories in life seem to connect automatically. Surely the lyrics of this song, from 2007, already tell the story of Grohl’s life?

So, it seems almost logical that he’s written the story down, just like he does his lyrics. “I decided to write my stories the usual way: myself. Writing helps me to revisit things. Sometimes, when you look back, they can look blurred, like looking through a lens, but it’s important to preserve your memories of times gone by,” he says.

And when you look at the few photographs of his notes, extracts and pictures of his handwriting on @davestruestories, that’s exactly what he has done, it seems. “The whole thing is a collection of memories of a life lived loud, of my childhood in a Washington DC suburb, being on the road as an 18 year old, and all the music that came after that. I can now share these adventures with the world I’ve seen and heard from the other side of the mic,” he says, summarising the situation.
