Earlier this year, many governments worldwide took the necessary precaution to place their populations under lockdown restrictions due to the Coronavirus pandemic. This undoubtedly was intended to have the benefit of reducing the spread of the virus, however it had been feared that incidents of domestic violence would inherently rise as a result of these measures. Women‘s shelters offered a place of refuge for many of those suffering with domestic abuse as well as homelessness. However, these services often are unable to support as many people as they need to due to a lack of funding.
Refreshingly, the difficulties of the pandemic have been supplemented by brands developing a more socially conscious awareness of the struggles around them. Legwear brand ITEM m6 have sought to offer support to some of the most vulnerable victims of domestic assault by unveiling their multi-skin tone shade camo-socks. The socks are intended to celebrate the brand’s core values of respect, diversity and female empowerment with 100% of the proceeds going to a women’s shelter in Bayreuth, Germany.
