The 5 Commandments to Cycling in Style

From as early as the 19th century fashion and bicycles have gone hand-in-hand when, bloomers – worn for modesty – paved the way for women to wear trousers. Some credit this as the true kick-starter to female emancipation.
Even today, for city folk, climbing on a bike after a long day at at the office gives us a feeling of true freedom rarely felt in modern life. However, the fashion conscious amongst us can find integrating two-wheels into our lives (and wardrobes) off-putting. But fear no more, SLEEK  highlights the style commandments you need to follow to ensure you are cycling sartorially.

Switch Heels for Flats

We are not against heels-and-wheels (see next post), but sometimes you need to get further than the nearest coffee shop, and then you need the help of sensible shoes. Take cues from Fashion Week’s finest (like Natalie Joost above) and plan your outfit around your flats. Stashing your heels under your desk a la Melanie Griffiths in Working Girl has never been so fun.

Ditch the Wedges

‘Giving up heels just because you cycle is silly’ says our SLEEK’s fashion and beauty director Jessica Hannan. Her top tip? ‘Avoid wedges! A stiletto or block heel is better to ram into your peddle ‘. (Disclaimer: this is not the safest advice and don’t expect your heels to come out of it unscathed).

Get a Backpack

There’s a reason backpacks are making a comeback. The bag trend of the season is not only fashionable, it’s also functional. It beats navigating your commute with a laptop bag in hand.

The Big Reveal

For pant wearing cyclists, keep in mind that you will be flashing your ankles. There is two routes you can take: dare to bare like the Italians, or wear a dress sock in a bright hue. Mr Porter has an excellent range.

If all Else Fails, be Fabulous

A post on cycle-chic would not be possible without mentioning Parisian stylist Catherine Baba, who always pedals with panache in her signature turbans, vintage YSL, and costume jewels. The key takeaway? Don’t change your look to get on a bike, or you will never bother. Just be your fabulous self.
