The man next door: Berlinale 71 welcomes Daniel Brühl’s directorial debut

As profiled in the Film category of our 10×10 series where we select the creative forces shaping Berlin, Daniel Brühl shot to international prominence for his role as Alex in 2003’s lauded satirical East Berlin drama, Good Bye Lenin!. His portrayal as Alex earned him a spot as the only German on that year’s selection of European Shooting Stars, as well as scooping numerous awards including Best European Actor at the European Film Awards and Best Performance at the German Film Awards in 2003.

Since then, Brühl’s career has gone from strength to strength, which has seen him become a regular feature on Hollywood’s flicks, appearing in Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds (2009), tense sporting drama Rush (2013) and box-office favourite Captain America: Civil War (2016). He hasn’t pigeonholed himself just to big-screen roles either —his performance as the lead in Netflix Originals’ The Alienist (2019) saw him secure a second Golden Globe nomination. He has also embarked on his first foray into executive production in Julie Delpy’s Berlin-set My Zoe (2019).

In 2021, Brühl makes his directorial debut with Nebenan (Next Door), which premieres at this year’s Berlinale. Like many other award ceremonies and festivals, the Berlinale has had to adjust proceedings in order to make it compliant with current restrictions. A two-stage solution has been devised in order to make this possible: from 1st to 5th March trade visitors and press representatives will have online access to this year’s selection of films. The second stage, known as the Summer Special will run from 9th to 20th June 9th in a selection of Berlin’s cinemas hosting screenings and panel discussions with filmmakers.

‘Nebenan (Next Door)’ directed by Daniel Brühl releases in March 2021 and premieres at Berlinale 71. In the meantime, you can revisit his editorial ‘Light as Air’, from SLEEK 62.
