The Roaring (Sustainable) 20s: Gucci’s Chinese New Year Campaign

In honour of the Year of the Tiger, Gucci has reimagined its archetypal “Flora” design, first created by artist Vittorio Accornero in the late 1960s, in a noteworthy capsule collection titled “Gucci Tiger”. Weaving together the motif of the tiger and the House’s signature floral backdrop, a nod to Alessandro Michele’s affinity towards the natural world, this colourful pastel collection encapsulates the positive cultural zeitgeist; a year believed to bring strength and resilience.

Combining intricate embroidery, artisanal crochet patches and hand-painted details with the recognisable “GG” motif, many of the styles throughout the “Gucci Tiger” collection are one-of-a-kind, devising these pieces as both garments to be worn as well as objects d’art. Shot by Angelo Pennetta, a much-loved photographer that brings life to the world of Gucci, this ready-to-wear collection sees graphic t-shirts unifying the phrase “Gucci Tiger’’ with a hand-painted feline, meanwhile, knitwear depicts an alternative rendition of the tiger, lying within a logo laden cyan sweater.

Although at the focus of this collection is the image of the tiger, an emblem of leadership, heroism and courage in Chinese astrology, the luxury House isn’t using this motif blindly. Since February 2020, Gucci has continued to support and contribute to The Lion’s Share Fund, an initiative in aid of the climate crisis and the loss of biodiversity in the natural world. “Gucci Tiger” introduces the House’s first entirely eco-friendly watches that make use of bio-based, animal-free, raw materials. This follows on from the Gucci Up project established in 2018, a project that is dedicated to the regeneration of textile waste as the House is committed to repurposing leftover materials and scraps by reusing them internally and donating to non-profit organisations.

Gucci’s ongoing initiatives can be found through the Gucci Equilibrium platform, an online platform “designed to connect people, planet and purpose”, igniting a relevant conversation in the global zeitgeist around the relationship between design and nature. Perhaps, “Gucci Tiger” is a moment for us to continue this conversation, as we move forwards in our resilient journey towards a sustainable future.
