Patrizia Sandretto Re Rebaudengo is one of the most influential collectors in Europe today. Since the 1990s she has been collecting contemporary works of art, using her impeccable eye for quality to amass a world-class collection. The Sandretto Re Rebaudengo collection has previously been shown in Poland, Italy and even had a year-long installation at the Whitechapel Gallery in London. Next week, this collection comes to the me Collectors room, Berlin, for its first outing in Germany.
The exhibition, which will last from 2 May until 21 September 2014, is based around the theme of a stanza – the concept of “a stopping place” for a poet to draw inspiration. Throughout the show, moments of reflection are explored through contemporary art, in works such as “A to Z 1994 Living Unit” by Andrea Zittel, and a detail from Ragnar Kjartansson’s “The End – Venezia”. Recent history is the background upon which this is all played out, as in photos of rooms from psychiatric hospitals in James Casebere’s “Toilets” and “Asylum” and Sam Taylor-Wood’s “Travesty of a Mockery”, which shows a confrontation between a couple on two separate screens. Meanwhile the collector becomes the collection itself, in Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster’s “Chambre”, where the artist reconstructs the bedrooms of private individuals, including Patrizia Sandretto Re Rebaudengo’s. Other artists shown as part of the collection include Cindy Sherman, Robert Ku?mirowski and Sherrie Levine.
The exhibition runs May 2nd until September 21st 2014
